As we continue to celebrate the season, today we are going to reflect on the story of Mary, the mother of our Savior. She was just a girl. A totally normal, middle-class teenager. In our modern-time scenario, she was the girl next door. Hardly the mother of a king, let alone the Messiah.
Mary’s story is a reminder that God’s plans often unfold in unexpected ways.
Imagine the surprise and wonder Mary must have felt when the angel Gabriel appeared to her. In Luke 1:26-38, we read about this miraculous encounter. Gabriel greeted her, saying, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you” (Luke 1:28).
Mary’s initial reaction was natural: she was troubled and confused. Yet Gabriel reassured her, explaining that she had been chosen to bear the Son of God. Mary’s response is one of the most beautiful examples of faith in Scripture: “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled” (Luke 1:38).
Mary’s willingness to say “yes” to God’s plan required incredible courage and trust. She faced potential shame and misunderstanding from her community and even her family. Yet she trusted that God’s plan was greater than her fears.
As we reflect on Mary’s story, we’re reminded of the importance of surrendering to God’s will. There may be times when His plans seem daunting or unclear, but like Mary, we can trust that He is faithful. Her story encourages us to embrace God’s calling with courage and faith.
This Christmas, consider how you might respond to God’s invitations in your life. Is there a step of faith He’s asking you to take? Mary’s example shows us that saying “yes” to God often leads to blessings beyond our imagination.
Mary’s story is also a reminder that God’s plans often unfold in unexpected ways. The Savior of the world was born not in a palace, but in a humble manger. Through Mary’s obedience, God’s grace entered the world in the most extraordinary way.
Let Mary’s story inspire you to trust in God’s perfect plan this Christmas season. Her faithful “yes” changed the world, and your obedience to God can have a lasting impact, too.
Reflection: Mary’s courage to trust God reminds us to embrace His plans with faith. What step of obedience might He be calling you to take?
Prayer: “Lord, thank You for Mary’s example of faith. Help me to trust You and say “yes” to Your plans in my life. Amen.”
