Being thankful even when you’re miserable
I wanted to take a moment to share some thoughts on gratitude, especially when we’re walking through difficult times. It’s not always easy, but I’ve been reflecting on James 1:2, which says: “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”
God is asking us to lean into Him when we are suffering.
It’s a tough message to digest at first—how can we find joy in suffering? Yet, James isn’t asking us to pretend the pain isn’t real. Instead, he’s inviting us to recognize that God is working even in the hardest of seasons. The trials we face are a means of refining our faith and building perseverance. Every time we go through tough times, we are literally becoming more and more like Jesus.
When we choose to see our suffering as an opportunity for growth, it changes our perspective. Testing isn’t easy, but it’s necessary. Just like muscles grow stronger through resistance, our faith strengthens through the challenges we face. These struggles can reveal things about ourselves that we may not have noticed before—our weaknesses, our reliance on God, and even our capacity for joy despite the circumstances.
I’ve come to believe that gratitude in suffering doesn’t mean being thankful for the hardship itself, but for the way God uses it to shape us. It’s trusting that He is with us through it all and that He’s using these trials to refine us for something greater.
So, if you’re walking through a season of testing right now, I want to encourage you to find moments of gratitude. Look for the lessons God is teaching you and the ways He’s strengthening your faith. It might not make the pain go away, but it can help you see the purpose behind it.
