Are you in the middle of a storm?

I’ve been reflecting on a passage from Paul in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 today: “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Isn’t it incredible how simple yet profound these three instructions are? Today, I want to focus on one of them: giving thanks.

Thankfulness is possible … even in the middle of the storm.

Gratitude is something we talk about a lot, but it’s not always easy to practice — especially when life feels overwhelming. Let’s be honest, thanking God when things are tough can feel unnatural. But here’s the thing: giving thanks isn’t just about expressing gratitude for the good stuff. It’s about trusting God in every situation, even the messy and confusing ones.

When we take time to thank God, even in difficult circumstances, something powerful happens. It shifts our focus from what’s wrong to who God is. We start to see His hand in the little things — a supportive friend, an encouraging word, or even the strength to get through the day. Gratitude reminds us that we’re not alone, and it deepens our trust in God’s plan, even when we don’t fully understand it.

And it’s not just about what a spirit of gratitude does for us. Thankfulness has a ripple effect on others. It brings joy, even in the midst of challenges, and it helps us find peace, no matter what’s going on around us. Gratitude can also change how we interact with others. When we focus on what we’re grateful for, we’re more likely to be patient, kind, and content—qualities that strengthen our relationships and reflect God’s love to those around us.

So, how do we make gratitude a habit? It doesn’t have to be complicated. Start small.

Take a few moments each day to thank God for something specific. Maybe it’s the people in your life, a little victory you experienced, or even something as simple as your morning coffee. Over time, you’ll find that looking for things to be thankful for becomes second nature, and your perspective will begin to shift.

I also encourage you to share your gratitude with others. Let someone know you’re thankful for them, or tell a friend about something God’s done in your life. Gratitude is contagious, and it’s amazing how encouraging it can be to those around us.

As we go through today — and every day — let’s make a point to find reasons to give thanks. It’s not always easy, but it’s so worth it. Whether life feels like smooth sailing or a rough patch, gratitude keeps our hearts focused on God’s goodness and faithfulness.

Reflection: Gratitude has a way of changing how we see life. It helps us focus on God’s faithfulness instead of our struggles. And there’s always something to be thankful for if we just look for it.

Prayer: “God, thank You for all the ways You bless us, even when life feels hard. Help us to see the good and trust You in the hard moments. Let our gratitude bring us closer to You and encourage the people around us. Amen.”
